World Down Syndrome Day
The twenty first day of the third month (in reference to the third chromosome our children have in their twenty first pair of their genetic make up) is World Down Syndrome day. An international awareness day that has been observed by the United Nations since 2012.This year Down Syndrome International’scampaign is to tell the world to “leave no one behind” and will:
- explain how negative attitudes and lack of knowledge about their potential, results in individuals with DS being left behind.
- explain how, across areas of life such as lifelong personal development, personal relationships, education, healthcare, work and livelihood, recreation and leisure and participation in public life, ALL people with DS must have opportunities, included on a full and equal basis with others;
- empower people with Down syndrome and those supporting and working with them toadvocate for these opportunities.
To mark WDSD Up on Downs are holding a photography display at St Albans Library and having a Waterways Experiences boat trip.
