Down’s Syndrome Awareness Week
20th March 2016 - 26th March 2016
My Friends, My Community – what it means to be included
This year the focus is celebrating people with Down’s syndrome, of all ages, who are part of our communities – at home, in schools and colleges, in workplaces, clubs and social groups.
Children and adults with Down’s syndrome must be able to enjoy full and equal rights alongside their peers. This includes the opportunity to participate fully in their communities as and when they wish with the right support.
Some people may need extra support to do things that are not specifically for people with a learning disability and we need to encourage our wider communities to be appropriately inclusive.
When children and adults with Down’s syndrome are given opportunities to participate, the whole community benefits.
Awareness Week 2016 is a chance for us all to share stories of positive inclusion, to help break down barriers, to stop stereotypes and to provide more opportunities for children and adults with Down’s syndrome to live their lives fully with the right support.
Up on Downs will be celebrating the Awareness Week and World Down Syndrome Day (March 21st) at the March Family and Friends and the Play and Sign Meet-Ups and will have some fundraising resources/ideas available like ‘Lots of Socks’ We welcome any members to use this opportunity to fund raise in their local communities.
Please send us your photos or share your own stories so we can celebrate, inspire and raise awareness together!
